Etymology

From Sanskrit অষ্ঠীৱৎ (aṣṭhīvat), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *HaṣṭʰiHwánts, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *HastčiHwánts. Cognate with Sylheti ꠀꠑꠥ (aṭú), Bengali হাঁটু (hãṭu).
