Borrowed from Classical Persian هند (hind), from Middle Persian hnd (hind), from Old Persian 𐏃𐎡𐎯𐎢𐏁 (hindūš), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sindʰus (river) or from Sanskrit सिन्धु (sindhu, a river, stream). Doublet of सिंध (sindh).
