From Sanskrit हस्तकूट (hastakūṭa), a compound of हस्त (hasta, “hand”) and कूट (kūṭa, “hammer”). Cognate with Punjabi ਹਥੌੜਾ (hathauṛā) / ہتھوڑا (hthoṛā), Gujarati હથોડો (hathoḍo), Marathi हातोडा (hātoḍā), Assamese হাতুৰী (haturi).Bengali হাতুড়ি (hatuṛi).
