Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *stebʰ- (to stand still, harden; prop up, support; pole). Cognate with Proto-Slavic *stьbъ (stem, stalk), Old Church Slavonic степень (stepenĭ, stair); English step, stop, stamp, stomp, stump, staff, stiff; Proto-Finnic *sambas (pillar) (whence sampo).
