Borrowed from Classical Persian صفر (sifr), from Arabic صِفْر (ṣifr, “zero; empty, void”), itself a calque of Sanskrit शून्य (śūnya). Cognate of Punjabi ਸਿਫ਼ਰ (sifar) and English zero.
