Inherited from Prakrit सत्तमअ (sattamaa), सत्तमय (sattamaya), from Sanskrit सप्तमक (saptamaka). By surface analysis, सात (sāt, “seven”) + -वाँ (-vā̃, “-th”). Doublet of सप्तम (saptam).
