Borrowed from Classical Persian سفید (safēd), from earlier سپید (sapêd), from Middle Persian spyt' (spēd, “white”), eventually from Proto-Indo-European *ḱweytos (“bright; shine”). Doublet of श्वेत (śvet). Cognate of English white. Compare Bengali সফেদ (śophed), Gujarati સફેદ (saphed), Marathi सफेद (saphed), Odia ସଫେଦ (sôphedô), Punjabi ਸਫ਼ੈਦ (safaid).
