Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *ḱléw-tro-m (“means of hearing”), from *ḱlew- (“to hear”). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *hleuþrą (whence Icelandic hljóður). By surface analysis, श्रो (śro, full grade of श्रु (śru, “to hear”)) + -त्र (-tra, suffix indicating instrumentality).
