- c. 200 CE – 300 CE, Vātsyāyana, Kāma Sūtra 6.1:
- वेश्यानां पुरुषाधिगमे रतिर्वृत्तिश्च सर्गात् ॥
रतितः प्रवर्तनं स्वाभाविकं कृत्रिमं अर्थार्थम् ॥- veśyānāṃ puruṣādhigame ratirvṛttiśca sargāt.
ratitaḥ pravartanaṃ svābhāvikaṃ kṛtrimaṃ arthārtham. - By having intercourse with men, courtesans obtain sexual pleasure, as well as their own maintenance. Now when she engages with a man out of attraction, her action is natural; but when she resorts to him for the purpose of getting money, her action is artificial and feigned and not driven by arousal.
