Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *yawni (abode) (compare Avestan 𐬵𐬎𐬌𐬌𐬀𐬊𐬥𐬀 (huiiaona, possessing good abodes)), beyond which its origin is disputed. Van Beek adduces Ancient Greek εὐνή (eunḗ) and εὖνις (eûnis) and furthermore ὑμήν (humḗn), rejecting the traditional equation to स्यूमन् (syū́man), and reconstructing a root reflected in यु (yu), युयोति (yuyóti).[1]
