Etymology

From Maharastri Prakrit 𑀫𑀘𑁆𑀙 (maccha), from Sanskrit मत्स्य (matsya, “fish”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mátsyas. Compare Marathi मासा (māsā), Hindi मछली (machlī) and Persian ⁧ماهی⁩ (mâhi). Doublet of मत्स्य (matsya) and मासो (māso).
