Inherited from Prakrit *𑀪𑀝𑁆 (*bhaṭ) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓𑁆𑀓- (-kka-). Compare Gujarati ભટકવું (bhaṭakvũ), Marathi भटकणे (bhaṭakṇe). McGregor suggests a relation to Sanskrit भ्रष्ट (bhraṣṭa). Cognate with Marathi भटकणे (bhaṭakṇe).
