Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘢𑘻𑘨 (pora), from Sanskrit *पोतर (potara​), an extension of पोत (pota, “young of animal or plant”). Cognate with Gujarati પોરિયું (poriyũ), Assamese পোৱালী (püali).
