From Proto-Indo-European *h₃neyd- (criticism, abuse, reviling). Cognate with Gothic 𐌽𐌴𐌹𐌸 (neiþ, hatred, spite), Latvian naids (hatred), Ancient Greek ὄνειδος (óneidos, reproach).
