Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀓𑀸𑀭𑁂𑀮𑁆𑀮𑀬 (kārellaya), related to, if not from, Sanskrit कारवेल्ल (kāravella, “bitter melon”). Compare Punjabi ਕਰੇਲਾ (karelā) / کَریلا (karelā), Gujarati કારેલું (kārelũ), Bengali করলা (korla), Marathi कारले (kārle), Assamese কেৰেলা (kerela).
