Probably from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀇𑀁𑀤𑀉𑀭 (*iṃdaüra), from an earlier *𑀇𑀁𑀤𑀯𑀼𑀭 (*iṃdavura), from Sanskrit इन्द्र (índra, “Indra”) + पुर (púra, “town, fortress”), literally “town of Indra”. Compare Marathi इंदूर (indūr).
