From Aramaic, from Akkadian 𒈬𒅎𒈠 (šaddaqdam), from 𒈬 (šattum, “year”) + 𒂵𒀜𒈬𒌝 (qadmum, “early, before”). Compare Classical Syriac ⁧ܐܫܬܩܕ⁩ (ʾeštəqaḏ, ʾeštəqady) and Hebrew ⁧אֶשְׁתָּקַד⁩ (ʾeštāqaḏ).
