Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac, from Aramaic ⁧חְדַעֵסְרֵא⁩ (ḥəḏaʿesrē). Equivalent to ⁧ܚܕ݂ܵܐ⁩ (ḥḏā, “one”) +‎ ⁧ܥܸܣܲܪ⁩ (ˁissar, “ten”); compare Arabic ⁧إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ⁩ (ʔiḥdā ʕašrata) and Hebrew ⁧אַחַת עֶשְׂרֵה⁩ (akhát 'esré).
