ܓܝܒܐ
Classical Syriac
Etymology
Unknown, possibly a variant of ܓܒܐ (gabbā, “side, flank”), of ܓܘܒܐ (gubbā, “cistern”), or from Akkadian 𒁺𒁍 (gub-bu /gubbû; agubbû, egubbû/, “reservoir, cistern”), ultimately from Sumerian 𒀀𒇷𒁀 (a-gub₂-ba /agubbû/, “a basin for lustration water”), Sumerian 𒇷 (gub₂, “to bathe”). Compare also Middle Persian [script needed] (kwp /kōf/, “mountain, hill; hump, dome-shape”).
