Inherited from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kádruš (brown, tan), likely from the BMAC substrate.

Related to Avestan 𐬐𐬀𐬛𐬭𐬎𐬎𐬀⸱𐬀𐬯𐬞𐬀 (kadruua.aspa, with brown horses) (whence unattested Avestan *𐬐𐬀𐬛𐬭𐬎 (*kadru, brown)), and cognate with Sanskrit कद्रु (kadru, brown, reddish-brown).
