Inherited from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kádruš (“brown, tan”), likely from the BMAC substrate.
Related to Avestan 𐬐𐬀𐬛𐬭𐬎𐬎𐬀⸱𐬀𐬯𐬞𐬀 (kadruua.aspa, “with brown horses”) (whence unattested Avestan *𐬐𐬀𐬛𐬭𐬎 (*kadru, “brown”)), and cognate with Sanskrit कद्रु (kadru, “brown, reddish-brown”).
