From Proto-Iranian *hmarati- (“to remember, recall, count”) (possibly with a prefix of unknown origin), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *smárati (“to remember, recollect”). Indo-Iranian cognates include Persian شمردن (“to count”), Pashto شمېرل (śmerël, “to count”), and Sanskrit स्मरति (smárati, “recollect”).
