Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀙𑀸𑀬𑀸 (chāyā), from Sanskrit छाया (chāyā́), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *śćaHyáH, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ḱeh₃ih₂. Cognate with Punjabi چھاں (chāṉ), Sindhi ڇانوَ (chā̃va), and Urdu چھاؤں (chāõ).
