Inherited from Prakrit विआह (viāha), विवाह (vivāha), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀯𑀺𑀯𑀸𑀳 (vivāha, Kalsi, Dhauli), 𐨬𐨁𐨬𐨱 (vivaha, Mansehra, Shahbazgarhi), from Sanskrit विवाह (vivāhá, literally taking away [the bride]). Compare Urdu بیاہ (byāh) / Hindi ब्याह (byāh).
