Inherited from Sanskrit स्वर्ग (svargá, “heaven, paradise; celestial abode of light; abode of Indra”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *suHargás, from Proto-Indo-European *sh₂ul-gʷḿ̥-s (“going to the sun”). Cognate with Urdu سُرَگ (surg, “heaven”).
