Etymology
From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (dlht'), [Book Pahlavi needed] (dlʾht'), 𐫅𐫡𐫟𐫤 (drxt /draxt/, “tree”), from Proto-Iranian *draxta- (“firmly standing”), with the first part deriving from Proto-Iranian *drag- (“to hold, strengthen”), itself related to Proto-Iranian *dā́ru (“wood, tree”) and/or Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰar- (“to hold, support”). Cognate with Parthian 𐫅𐫡𐫟𐫤 (drxt /draxt/), Baluchi درچک (diračk, “tree”). Compare also the Iranian borrowings Imperial Aramaic 𐡃𐡓𐡇𐡕𐡀 (drḥtʾ, “tree”), Old Armenian դրախտ (draxt, “garden; paradise”).
