Etymology
First attested in c. 1669 as Middle Hindi جُمَعْرات (juma'rāt), a contraction of جُمْعَہ رات (jum'a rāt), from جُمْعَہ (jum'a, “Friday”) + رات (rāt, “eve”), because as per Islamic and Abrahamic tradition, the day changes at sunset.
