Etymology

In Classical Arabic يَعْضِيض (yaʕḍīḍ), from the root ع ض ض (ʕ-ḍ-ḍ) due to its jagged appearance, altered after a scheme known from جَرْبُوز (jarbūz) and جَرْبُوع (jarbūʕ), perhaps also under influence of the plant-names جَعْدَة (jaʕda) and جُعْدَة (juʕda).
