From Middle Persian [script needed] (wp- /⁠waf-⁠/, to weave), from Proto-Iranian *wabdi, Proto-Indo-Iranian *wabdʰi, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *webʰ-. Compare Greek υφαίνω (yfaíno), English weave, Avestan ubdaēna ("made of cloth"), and Sanskrit उभ्नाति (ubhnāti, entwine).
