Persian

Etymology

From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (wʾc- /wāz-/), from Proto-Iranian *wāz- (to play, contend), probably from a blend of Proto-Iranian *wan- (to win) + *Haz- (to drive), from Proto-Indo-European *wenh₁- (to love, wish) + Proto-Indo-European *h₂eǵ- (to drive), respectively. Likely related to Sanskrit वाज (vāja, contest; conflict; battle).
