Etymology 1
Inherited from Proto-Turkic *agrïg (“pain, ache”); cognate with Azerbaijani ağrı, Bashkir ауырыу (awırıw), Chuvash ырату (yrat̬u), Kazakh ауру (auru), Kyrgyz оору (ooru), Turkmen agyry, Uyghur ئاغرىق (aghriq), Uzbek ogʻriq and Yakut ыарыы (ıarıı).

Etymology 2
The name of the city was changed in 1946 and owes its name to Mount Ararat, which is called Ağrı Dağı in Turkish. The city was previously known as قرهكلیسا (karakilise) and قرهكوسه (karaköse), a corrupted form of the former.
