From Arabic مِسْكِين (miskīn, “poor”), from Classical Syriac ܡܶܣܟܸܝܢܳܐ (meskēnā, “miserable, wretched”), from Akkadian 𒈦𒆕𒂗 (muškēnum, “commoner, poor”).
