Etymology

The origin is uncertain.

Martirosyan derives the component *հաւ- (*haw-) from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ep- (body of water, river) and identifies the component *առ- (*aṙ-) with the one in գետառ (getaṙ), from *srew- (to flow, stream).[1]
