Etymology

Learned borrowing from Old Armenian եղեռն (ełeṙn, calamity). According to Ačaṙyan, the sense of "crime" is a modern literary development.

Old Armenian

Etymology

Ačaṙyan rejects the proposals to link with եղար (ełar, lamentation) and leaves the origin open. According to Pokorny, inherited from the Proto-Indo-European *h₃elh₁- (to destroy). This is accepted by Ałayan and J̌ahukyan.
