Etymology

The original spelling is արաւս (araws), of uncertain origin. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *h₂erh₃w-n̥s-, from *h₂erh₃- (to plow), and cognate with Ancient Greek ἄρουρα (ároura), Middle Irish arbor, Old Armenian հարաւունք (harawunkʻ).
