Etymology

The origin is uncertain.

Ačaṙyan takes the root to be *արգ- (*arg-), found also in արգահատեմ (argahatem), and derives it from Proto-Indo-European *arkʷ-, with Welsh arffed (lap) and Scottish Gaelic arcuinn (cow's udder) as cognates.[1][2] J̌ahukyan derived the ending -անդ (-and) from the Proto-Indo-European *-ti- suffix with a preceding -- element.[3]

Lagarde connects with Persian ارغند (arğand).[4]

Still others connect the word with Proto-Slavic *grǫdь (breast).
