ասփուր
Middle Armenian
Alternative forms
- ասպուր (aspur), ասպուռ (aspuṙ), ասֆուր (asfur), մասփուր (maspʻur), մասփար (maspʻar)
Etymology
From Arabic عُصْفُر (ʕuṣfur). The forms with an մ- (m-) are from the related مُعَصْفَر (muʕaṣfar, “safflower”).
Ačaṙyan records the given names Մասպուռ (Maspuṙ) [1628] and Մասփուր (Maspʻur) [1629] as alternative forms of Մասուր (Masur, literally “rosehip”),[1] but they are rather derived from this safflower word.
