Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish چوربه‌جی / چورباجی (çorbacı, a military rank of the Janissaries, literally soup cook). Cognate to Bulgarian чорбаджи́я (čorbadžíja) and Greek τσορμπατζής (tsormpatzís).
