From Proto-Finno-Ugric *orpa(sɜ)~*orwa(sɜ). Either borrowed from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hárbʰas or Proto-Balto-Slavic *arbas, with usual Mordvinic change from *oCa to *uCo.
Cognates include Finnish orpo, Northern Sami oarbbis, Hungarian árva.
