Etymology

Borrowed from Classical Persian سُلْطَان sg (sultān, a sultan), from Arabic سُلْطَانٌ m sg (sulṭānun, a sultan, indefinite nominative).

Nucleus of the second syllable had become back -а- (-a-) under the influence of original Arabic emphatic onset ـطـ (-ṭ-). Therefore, the first syllable had been harmonised.
