стебаться

Russian

Etymology

Uncertain, likely a cross of dialectal стебну́ть (stebnútʹ, pf.), стёбывать (stjóbyvatʹ, to stitch; whip; eat up, impf.) and издева́ться (izdevátʹsja, to jeer, bully). The former is either an alteration of стега́ть (stegátʹ, to whip; to stitch, quilt), or could be denominal from стебель (stebelʹ, a stalk, scape), i.e. used as a whip.
