Earlier *sēs<*segis<*sekis<*sekiz, from Proto-Turkic *sekiŕ (“eight”). Cognate with Kazakh сегіз (segız), Kyrgyz сегиз (segiz), Southern Altai сегис (segis), Old Turkic 𐰾𐰚𐰔 (sekiz), Western Yugur saqïz, Uzbek sakkiz, Turkish sekiz, etc.
