Of expressive origin; possibly from Etymology 1 via semantic shift (prompting a shift in transitivity, too) or from the onomatopoeia пу-у-у (pu-u-u).

Comparable with Bulgarian бу́хам (búham, to batter), пу́кам (púkam, to crack, to burst).
