From Proto-Slavic *pugavъ/*pǫgavъ, probably borrowed from Russian. Morphologically equivalent to пуг (pug, thrust, prod) (dated) + -ав (-av). Further akin to Old Church Slavonic пѫгꙑ (pǫgy, metal button).
