From Proto-Mordvinic *ovks~*oŋks, inherited from Proto-Uralic *aŋe (opening, incision, deepening). Cognate with Eastern Mari аҥ (, hole; mouth), Udmurt ым (ym), Komi-Zyrian вом (vom), Komi-Permyak ӧм (öm, mouth), Hungarian ajak (lip).
