Etymology
- From ой (oy) + оҕос (oğos). ой (oy) from Proto-Turkic *ōj. Compare to Northern Altai уй (uy, “steppe, Tuba”), Tatar уй- (uy-, “to hollow out”), etc.
- Or from Proto-Turkic *ayakuč, diminutive and back vowel variant of *eyekü (“side, upper rib”). Compare Chuvash аяк (ajak) and Turkish eyeği.
