Cognate with synonymous Ukrainian миші́й (myšíj), мише́й (myšéj), муші́й (mušíj), муши́й (mušýj), Belarusian мяшэй (mjašej), мяжэй (mjažej). All perhaps from the word for "fly (insect)" – Russian му́ха (múxa), Ukrainian му́ха (múxa), paralleled in Serbo-Croatian muhar / мухар, Slovak mušec. Some forms are influenced by the word for mouse — Russian мышь (myšʹ), Ukrainian ми́ша (mýša).
