Etymology

From Proto-Turkic *beniŋ; equivalent to ми- (mi-, stem of the first-person singular pronoun) +‎ -нің (-nìñ, genitive suffix). Cognate with Shor меең, Tuvan мээң (meeñ), Southern Altai мениҥ (meniŋ), Kyrgyz менин (menin), Kazakh менің (menıñ), etc.

Usage notes

It’s mandatory for substantive after минің being suffixed with agglutinative -м (-m), or its epenthetic variants -ім (-ìm) and -ым (-ım). However, as well as in other Turkic languages, the determiner itself can be omitted. E.g. for ‘my labour rights’ — минің істеніс праволарым (minìñ ìstenìs pravolarım) or істеніс праволарым (ìstenìs pravolarım).
