Etymology
Inherited from Old East Slavic мѣсѧць (měsęcĭ), from Proto-Slavic *měsęcь, from Proto-Indo-European *mḗh₁n̥s.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): [ˈmʲesʲɪt͡s]
Audio (file)
Noun
ме́сяц • (mésjac) m inan (genitive ме́сяца, nominative plural ме́сяцы, genitive plural ме́сяцев, relational adjective ме́сячный, diminutive месяцо́к)
Usage notes
Stress shift to the ending is standard in по месяца́м (po mesjacám) and месяца́ми (mesjacámi, “for months”), but this has led to occasional non-standard use of the full stress pattern with final stress in all plural forms and an -а ending in the nominative/accusative plural (see го́род (górod)).
