Inherited from Proto-Slavic *lubъ (bast), from Proto-Indo-European *lowbʰ-ó-s, from *lewbʰ- (to peel, cut off, harm). Cognate with Lithuanian lùpti (to peel, to shell), Latvian luba (narrow strip of wood), Latin liber (book, inner bark of a tree), Proto-Germanic *laubą (whence English leaf).
