From Proto-Turkic *kumursga, compare Old Turkic 𐰴𐰆𐰢𐰆𐰺𐰽𐰍𐰀 (qumursɣa), Kyrgyz кумурска (kumurska).
From a diminutive *qïmïrtqa-č, with an earlier change of s into t common in clusters, and a later epenthesis to break up a difficult cluster.
